For nearly a month the city fills with exhibitions, workshops and open showrooms that the rest of the year either do not exist or do not let you in. Six large exhibitions anchor it from fixed venues, and a circuit of studios opens its doors for a few days each. Same city, mostly free, spread between Tacubaya, Chapultepec, Polanco, Roma and Lomas.
It started in 2009 as a design week and grew into the platform where Mexican design measures itself against everyone else. Each edition invites a guest country, runs residencies that put a foreign designer inside a Mexican craft workshop, and hands an entire house to interior designers to build out for real. What began as a listing of events is now the season that sets the design calendar for the country.
The six big exhibitions hold through October and some into November, so there is no rush there. What goes fast are the workshops and the open showrooms, most of them a day or two. If you only have one afternoon, Design House and Dealers share an address and work as one stop.
