When the painter Brett Whiteley died in 1992, his widow Wendy started clearing the rubbish off the abandoned railway land below their Lavender Bay house because it was a mess she could actually fix. Thirty years later it is one of the most beautiful public gardens in Sydney, it is heritage listed, and nobody charges anything.
WHY IT’S WORTH IT
1One woman cleared a rubbish tip on land she did not own, and kept going for thirty years.
2Heritage listed, free, and open at any hour. There is no gate.
3The harbour view from inside it is the one Brett Whiteley painted.
