On 24 June 1978 hundreds of people came down this street behind a yellow flatbed truck. Police met them with violence, fifty-three were arrested, and the Sydney Morning Herald then printed their names, ages, addresses and jobs. That march became the longest continuously running LGBTIQA+ rights parade in the world, and the 2.4 kilometre route is heritage listed.
