Jørn Utzon won an open competition in 1957 with interlocking shells nobody knew how to build, and then left Australia before it was finished. He never came to the opening in 1973. The building is best walked around at different hours: the tiles change with the light and that is the part a photograph never carries.
WHY IT’S WORTH IT
1Utzon never saw it open. He was invited in 1973 and said no.
2The exterior is free and it changes completely with the hour and the light.
3The architectural tour goes inside the shells, which is the part you cannot see from outside.
