The Eora called it Tumbalong, a place where seafood is found, and the shores were piled with oyster shells accumulated over thousands of years, which is why the Europeans named it Cockle Bay. Governor Ralph Darling put his own name on it in 1826. The Pyrmont Bridge from 1902 is still the oldest working electrically-powered swing span bridge in the world.
WHY IT’S WORTH IT
1The oldest working electric swing span bridge in the world, and you can walk it.
2It was Tumbalong long before it was Darling Harbour.
3It only became public in 1988. Before that it was docks.
