THE TAKE
The water palace the last raja of Karangasem built in 1948, and helped dig himself: a hectare and a bit of ponds, fountains and stone figures, crossed by the stepping stones everyone knows.
WHY IT’S WORTH IT
1Built in 1948 by a raja who worked in the mud alongside his labourers.
2Rebuilt after the 1963 eruption, so it is a survival as much as a garden.
3The stepping stones cross the koi pond, which is the whole image.
