THE TAKE

Twelve and a half hectares of forest run by the village of Padangtegal, with around a thousand long tailed macaques living in seven groups among banyan and nutmeg, and three fourteenth century temples inside.

WHY IT’S WORTH IT
1The village runs it, so the money stays where the forest is.
2A hundred and eighty six tree species, which makes it a forest and not a zoo.
3Three temples from the fourteenth century sit inside the sanctuary, still sacred ground.
